An Urban Palimpsest
The exceptional location of the Nantes University Hospital, anchored in the heart of the Nantes metropolis, marks the desire to democratize access to modern healthcare.
Today, as this concrete monument loses its use, it's the symbolism of this architectural heritage, so prominent in the city, that needs to be questioned.
La situation exceptionnelle du CHU de Nantes, ancré au cœur de la métropole nantaise, marque la volonté de démocratiser l'accès aux soins modernes.
Aujourd'hui, alors que ce monument de béton perd son usage, c'est la symbolique de ce patrimoine architectural, si prégnant dans la ville, qui doit être interrogée.
As the city is a reflection of society, what could be more beautiful than to adapt such a heritage to contemporary needs?

The block is to become a landscaped centrality that completes the Green Star structure,
defining a green insularity between city and nature.

The constraint posed by contemporary climate issues is the opportunity to reinvent a metropolitan center that defines a new quality of living-together at the crossroads of geography, architectural heritage, society and the Anthropocene.

The openness of the ground floor opens up a new access to the Loire river and creates a connection from one side of the block to the other. Sheltered alleyways, whose grid complements the existing buildings, extend the city's passageways.
L'ouverture du rez-de-chaussée permet d'ouvrir un nouvel accès à la Loire et de créer une liaison d'un côté à l'autre de l'îlot. Des venelles abritées, dont la trame complète les bâtiments existants, prolongent les passages de la ville.
Nourishing gardens render the soil porous and create interaction with residents and, more generally, with the living world. They are an invitation to travel, highlighting the diversity of flora. The monofunctional built heritage is now transformed into a shared urban piece.
Les jardins nourriciers rendent le sol poreux et créent une interaction avec les habitants et, plus généralement, avec le monde vivant. Ils sont une invitation au voyage, mettant en valeur la diversité de la flore. Le patrimoine bâti monofonctionnel est désormais transformé en un élément urbain partagé.

The architectural language is also unified through the prism of the energy crisis by equipping high-performance façade treatment. Partially planted facades and roofs soften the mineral aspect of the complex and reduce the heat island effect.
Le langage architectural est également unifié à travers le prisme de la crise énergétique en s'équipant d'un traitement de façade performant. Les façades et toitures partiellement végétalisées adoucissent l'aspect minéral du complexe et réduisent l'effet d'îlot de chaleur.
Following a logic of adaptive reuse, spatial potential of existing structures are converted to programs for the young and elders.

A landscaped promenade links the monuments of Nantes and becomes a similar leisure area to its counterpart on the other side.
