A Micro Climate For Culture
Fleurance, a medium-sized rural town in the Gers department, represents a typical French situation: an old town center, in this case a bastide, is seeing its population decline and age slightly.
Nevertheless, the bastide remains a relevant urban form because, in addition to its obvious heritage aspect, its compactness creates social proximity and reduces dependence on the car.
Fleurance, commune rurale de taille moyenne située dans le département du Gers, représente une situation typiquement française : un centre ancien, en l'occurrence une bastide, voit sa population décliner et vieillir légèrement.
Néanmoins, la bastide reste une forme urbaine pertinente car, outre son aspect patrimonial évident, sa compacité crée une proximité sociale et réduit la dépendance à l'égard de la voiture.
At a time of global warming, however, the bastide suffers from two major pitfalls: its impermeability and mineral nature. The redevelopment is an opportunity to think about the regeneration of the bastide.
Mais à l'heure du réchauffement climatique, la bastide souffre de deux écueils majeurs : son imperméabilité et sa minéralité. Le réaménagement est l'occasion de réfléchir à la régénération de la bastide.
Situated at the junction of 2 important streets, the master plan establishes landscape arteries that cross the bastide and transforms an impermeable and run down industrial land into an island of coolness for social cohesion by adapting to the climate.
Situé à la jonction de deux rues importantes, le plan directeur établit des artères paysagères qui traversent la bastide et transforme un terrain industriel imperméable et dégradé en un îlot de fraîcheur pour la cohésion sociale en s'adaptant au climat.
The permeable site is designed around water and plants. Water misters that run on recuperated rainwater cool the residents and make it possible to measure the number of very hot days based on their activation. A pavement of reused local stone with an openwork design allows water to seep through. The surrounding area is planted with both a layer of shrubs and tall trees, which provide effective cover from the sun. Under this vegetation, cultural and sport activities, artistic events and meetings can take place freely, combining ecological and social objectives.
Le site perméable est conçu autour de l'eau et des plantes. Des brumisateurs d'eau fonctionnant avec de l'eau de pluie récupérée rafraîchissent les habitants et permettent de mesurer le nombre de journées très chaudes en fonction de leur activation. Un trottoir en pierre locale réutilisée et ajourée permet à l'eau de s'infiltrer. L'espace environnant est planté à la fois d'une couche d'arbustes et de grands arbres, qui offrent une protection efficace contre le soleil. Sous cette végétation, les activités culturelles et sportives, les événements artistiques et les réunions peuvent se dérouler librement, combinant des objectifs écologiques et sociaux.
The project sees culture as a social link and Fleurance as a town of art and social innovation. The strategy for redeveloping the buildings lies at the crossroads between reusing existing structures, integrating new programs and using the public outdoor spaces to complement the almost mono-functional bastide.
Le projet considère la culture comme un lien social et Fleurance comme une ville d'art et d'innovation sociale. La stratégie de réaménagement des bâtiments se situe à la croisée des chemins entre la réutilisation des structures existantes, l'intégration de nouveaux programmes et l'utilisation des espaces publics extérieurs pour compléter la bastide presque monofonctionnelle.
To increase synergies between the buildings, their ground floors open out to the shared landscape.
Afin d'accroître les synergies entre les bâtiments, leurs rez-de-chaussée s'ouvrent sur le paysage commun.
The three buildings on the site are linked by a homogeneous architectural treatment in local, recycled, openwork wood that protects from the sun and allows ventilation of the facades. Coherent, open and protected, this new cultural landscape offers Fleurance and its residents a desirable space that is adapted to the consequences of global warming.
Les trois bâtiments du site sont reliés par un traitement architectural homogène en bois local, recyclé et ajouré, qui protège du soleil et permet la ventilation des façades. Cohérent, ouvert et protégé, ce nouveau paysage culturel offre à Fleurance et à ses habitants un espace désirable et adapté aux conséquences du réchauffement climatique.
