MEKONG HOUSE 2
Mekong House 2, 2020
Nested along a meander of the Mekong River, in the outskirt of Phnom Penh, this villa is composed of a two-stories
building following the river direction to maximize the view and in a single-story building forming a courtyard on entrance side to provide a sense of arrival.
The villa stage its relation to water taking the visitor through three landscape sequences: first the mineral drop-off which gives a sense of mystery as a series of wide wooden pivot doors enclose the house, followed by a patio planted with palms and bordered with a covered walkway, while finally a grass garden gently sloping to the river.
Each program is expressed like an abstract volume and express a refined work on geometric shapes and modules. The abstract wooden volume contains all the family spaces, it seems to detach from the ground as the living space is fully transparent and the support functions are glad with local sandstone. The wooden shutters filter the light and protects the depth of the balconies of the bedrooms from the sun and rain while offering privacy. This project is a continuation of bloom’s work about layered facades and the use of local material finishes and craft.
