MEKONG HOUSE

Phnom Penh, Completed 2018

Anchor 1

Private house, 500 sqm

This house is an attempt at proposing an alternative to the neo-colonial houses visible all around Cambodia. The client really wanted a tropical house and we wanted it to blend with it’s surrounding of vernacular Cambodian house while erasing unneeded decorations.

‘Architectural modesty and integration are the values of this house. It offers the best between western comfort and Cambodian craft.’

The house is compact with a double roof to embody the archetypical shape of the Cambodian houses. Larges terraces and a covered arcade creates wide open belvederes over the Mekong river. All opening are covered with custom-made wooden shutters to protect from the sun and provide intimacy to the inhabitants. Special care has been given to the proportion of the opening, the same module is reported all around the house. The terra-cotta roof tiles blend the house with the surrounding houses.
